I would be lying to you if I told you that I was an overnight success story. In fact, it took me months to get traction while it seemed like everyone around me was killing it.
You see, I started like many others. My plan was to enter corporate America and all would be good right?
4 years and a degree later I was a cubicle warrior living the dream…
Not so much…In fact, I hated it.
That fueled hatred led me down a long road trying to build a business for myself. Something that was invested in me and not filling someone else’s pockets.
Product after product and method after method I eventually stumbled accross blogging. And the more I dug into it the more it became clear that people were building six-figure businesses just by writing and sharing things they already knew on a blog.
It looked simple and that excited me. It excited me enough to get started and I put my first blog out there to the world.
But things weren’t quite as easy as they appeared…
I was creating content
I was optimizing for SEO
I was sharing my posts on social media
I was trying to drive traffic
I was putting a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into blogs with practically nothing to show for. I was doing all the things they say to do but it was taking me months to barely get any traction. I was working my ass off while others seemed like overnight success stories.
Just a few short months later the excitement came to a quick end when I found out it was much easier to be one of the 99% of blogs that fail then to be one of the “overnight success stories.” 🙁
But, I didn’t stop and that is what led me to where I am today. Not only have I been able to build multiple successful blogs but I have also helped many others do the same thing.
And maybe that’s why you’re reading this…because YOU want to do the same thing.
Here’s the thing. It took me a long time to get to where I’m at today. But you can take the fast track. Sounds cool right?
What changed everything…
It was time for a change. It was time to turn my frustration into something productive. I knew others were doing it so why couldn’t I? It was time to dig deep.
I started analyzing and reverse engineering all the successful blogs in my niche. Then I went outside my niche. I call it my “man on a mission phase” because I went through everything!
I found there first blog post, I went through their about page, I studied their most shared content, I got on their email list, I made notes of how they designed their blog, I extensively followed how they branded their blog…
I went through it all.
Then I went on to write hundreds of blog posts as I was learning how to create great content. Content that gets shares, content that builds authority, content that ranks, and content that gets subscribers and customers.
I tested many blog designs, product funnels, content creation strategies, and all the pieces that add up to creating a successful blog.
What I found out was that all successful blogs were built using the same blueprint. Regardless of the niche they all followed a similar blueprint. I was blown away that I hadn’t discovered this before.
Then I found out I could repeat my success again and again following the same SIMPLE blueprint every time I created a blog. I realized I could create blogs that got traffic, got subscribers, and made money. Throughout this journey I found that there were for major components to building a successful blog. And that is what I wan’t to give you today so you can build a 6-figure blog without wasting years like I did. Consider this the fast track :).
The components of a 6-Figure Blog
While there are several steps to building a successful blog all of it can be summarized into 4 essential components. Here are the 4 components of a profitable authority blog.
And right now that probably looks like a difficult task. But I assure you that it is much easier than you think. While there is fancy terminology like branding, return path, expert positioning, etc. it boils down to a simple process. At the end of the day we are people helping people and trading value for money. That’s all online business and blogging is about.
- Creating valuable free content that brings in an audience
- Sending them relevant paid offers to take the next step
- Providing more valuable content
- Process repeats
Alright so lets dig a little deeper into each component.
Part 1 – Authority
Authority is the framework for everything that we do. We want to brand and position ourselves as the go to person in our niche. This part is essential as people buy from people they trust. Being the go to person in your niche and providing valuable content gives you instant credibility that people can trust.
Why expert positioning is key to a successful blog
Expert positioning is something that I refer to a lot in all of my authority powered trainings. Expert positioning is positioning yourself as the expert or go to source in your market.
To understand why this is so important you have to look at it from a customer’s point of view. When someone makes it to your blog they’re looking to get answers to a question that they may have. They’re seeking help on something.
And we are all well aware that blogs are a dime a dozen. So when we seek help we’re looking for someone that we can trust is going to lead us in the right direction. Otherwise, we are searching for that back button and looking for the next answer from someone that we can trust.
And when someone first hits our blog we have no relationship with them. Without that relationship there is no trust established. This is where expert positioning comes into play. Without having the opportunity to build a relationship with them expert positioning can provide that trust they need to believe in you.
Through this belief there is a better chance they will subscribe to your mailing list, invest in your products, or return in the future.
How to position yourself as an expert
There are a number of ways to position yourself as an expert in any field. Part of positioning yourself is providing expert value in everything you do. So let’s look at some of those ways.
When it comes to blogging there is one common element that all of our teaching is based around. It’s the one thing that drives all other aspects of this business. That aspect is authority.
And here’s why…..
When you establish Authority in your market everything else becomes easier. Getting traffic. Getting subscribers. Making sales. Building long lasting relationships with customers.
When you establish Authority subscribers come to you instead of you chasing subscribers. You become the resource that those in your industry can trust. That trust combined with your authority does the selling for you.
And there is one element that builds Authority faster and better than anything else…
But not any old content. High quality content!
When you analyze the content you put on your blog look at the value you are delivering. Are you delivering value that qualifies you as an expert? Go the extra mile to create great content and you will be amazed at the results.
Expert By Association
One of the easiest ways to position yourself as an expert is associating with other experts. Establish relationships with other experts to associate with them. You can reference them in your content, guest post on their site, and even interview them on your blog. Believe me, people will notice this. This is a fast way to position yourself as an expert.
Most people that have products demonstrate that they have some level of expertise.
Think about it. Someone with a product is going to appear more reputable than someone linking to an affiliate offer. Its that simple.
As I mentioned earlier, giving that first impression is huge. Having multiple high quality products is a great way to prove your expertise in any niche.
Combine that with testimonials or social proof and it can really have an impact.
Building authority and positioning yourself as the goto expert in your niche is the first step of building a 6-figure blog. Now its time to put in place a monetization strategy to make it happen.
Part 2 – Offers To Sell On Your Blog
In order to be in business you have to have a way to monetize your blog. There are two ways that I highly recommend you go about monetizing your blog.
- Your own products and/or services
- Affiliate Offers
There are many ways to make money with a blog but these two ways are the most profitable especially for the soloprenuer.
Plain and simple… the best way to make money from a blog is creating your own products and coaching/mentoring programs. And notice I did say products not product. And I say this because I want you to have a funnel or multiple products that you can promote to your audience.
Now it won’t happen over night but it is something to work towards.
Having your own products does a couple of things.
- Higher profit margin…meaning you will make more money per every sale you make on your blog
- Products build credibility and position you as an expert (Products give you instant credibility)
Products are easier to create than you think
One thing that I consistently see in clients that is holding them back is their fears and doubts. So many people who are experts at what they do. They produced page after page or post after post of amazing content but never make money from it.
And It’s not because they’re not capable of making a product. It’s not because they can’t get traffic to their sales page.
- It’s because they can’t get over their fear of releasing an inferior product.
- Or they fear they will be releasing an incomplete product.
- Or they have doubts that they are not an expert.
A lot of people are going to have fears about product creation. They’re going to think they may or may not be qualified to even do it. And here’s my take on it:
If you are qualified enough to blog on a topic then you are qualified enough to create products
If you are consistently creating high quality content that delivers value to your audience you probably already have 90% of the pieces of a product. Often times a product is created from content that you have already completed. It is a matter of organizing it in a logical/useful manner and filling in the gaps. Then taking the extra steps to make sure it is as helpful to the user as possible.
Most information people need is already out there. If people want it bad enough they will go search for it for free. However, a product puts it in a nice package that they don’t have to search for. On top of that it is presented to them in a manner that leads them through a process to help them achieve their goals or overcome a problem. Remember this when you think about product creation.
Once you have the offers you need to get people in front of them. This is when we really start to get traction!
Part 3 – Lead Generation (Traffic)
This is where most people go wrong. They spend 80% of their time on creating products, fancy blog designs, creating content, etc. And spend the other 20% of the time (if that) on promoting their blog. This is a backwards approach!
Any profitable blog spends the majority of their time promoting especially when just starting out. If you want to be successful with a blog fast you have spend 80% of your time on driving traffic and 20% of your time on all other things. Spend 20% of your time creating a piece of content 80% of your time promoting it. Creating great content is only as good as the people who actually see it. So lets look at what an actual weekly schedule might look like.
So if you had 10 hours a week to dedicate to working on your blog you could break it down like this.
- 1 hour writing awesome content.
- 1 hour adding images and working on blog design.
- 1 hour promoting your content on social media.
- 2 hours creating a couple videos to promote your blog. Put them on YouTube, Facebook, or something similar.
- 2 hours writing guest posts on other blogs to bring traffic to your blog.
- 1 hour putting together a presentation that will go on slideshare to promote your blog post.
- 2 hours commenting on niche forums and social media pages.
Notice that 8 hours was focused on generating traffic and promotion and only 2 hours on other things. Once you have launched your blog this is how you should split your time. Now obviously you may have more or less hours per week to work on your blog so adjust accordingly. The key is that you are spending the majority of your time promoting and driving traffic.
Part 4 – The Follow up
This part of the process is all about repeating the cycle and getting people back into your system. So far we have:
- Positioned ourselves as an expert
- Put out offers to sell
- Generated Leads
Now it is time to communicate with those leads and customers to take things to the next level. By getting leads you are creating an email list (THE MOST POWERFUL ASSET YOU CAN HAVE AS AN ONLINE MARKETER). Once you have that email list it is traffic that you own and can send anywhere you want. You can send them to your own products/services, affiliate offers, to new content on your blog and more…you can send them anywhere you want. That’s powerful!
The best part is that you can even automate a lot of this.
Lets assume you have 3 products. A $17 ebook, a $27 video course, and a $97 workshop. You could have an automated email campaign that goes out to each new subscriber that first builds a relationship with them and then markets them your products on the back-end.
- Emails 1- 5 would be relationship building and content emails.
- Emails 6 – 9 would promote your $17 ebook
- Emails 10 -12 more content emails
- Emails 13-16 would promote your $27 video course.
- Emails 17 – 20 more content emails
- Emails 21-23 would promote your $97 workshop
No you have a profit pulling email campaign that is completely automated and goes out to every new person who subscribes to your email list!
Another thing to point out is that these don’t have to be your own products. These could just as easily be affiliate offers.
On top of your automated email campaign you could be sending out broadcast emails each time you post a new blog post. This would allow you to continuously provide value to your audience, build more trust with your subscribers, and get them to more relevant offers.
Ready To Take The Next Step?
Thats it guys. 4 steps to building a 6-figure blog:
- Position ourselves as the go to expert in our niche
- Put out offers
- Generate Leads
- The Follow up
This is the exact formula that the majority of high earning authority blogs operate under. You could take this same formula, apply it to your niche, and get amazing results.
Knowing what you know now is powerful! But in order to get this to work you have to get the foundation right. If you don’t have the foundation right it makes it really difficult to get the results your looking for with your blog. But you’re a smart marketer ;).
