Today I want to talk to you a little bit about keyword research. And one thing that we talk about in all of our trainings is how important research is to the process. If you want to build a successful blog, a successful authority blog then you need to do the research.
An important part of that research is keyword research. We want to know exactly what our target audience is searching for. And we want to deliver the results they are looking for and have those keywords on their blog so that when they go to Google and search we are going to come up in the search results.
A lot of people never do keyword research. Yes, keyword research is note exciting but it is effective. People are to excited to get out there and start typing out content and they miss a lot of potential traffic because they didnt do the research up front. Missing out on traffic is not something most bloggers can affor to do.
How To Make A Keyword List
This means you need to create a nice keyword list for your blog. It starts with your niche or your topic. What exactly is your blog about. Start at a high level and break it down into a pyramid shape.
So after what your blog or niche is you go down to a category level. This will expand your niche into the main subtopics. Then underneath those categories you will have keywords. Under each category you will want to come up with as many keywords and keyword variations as possible.
The best way to do this is start with a brainstorming session. Before you get to involved with keyword tools do a brain dump and write down everything that you can think of related to your niche that you think people would be interested in or searching for.
Once you have created a nice list with brainstorming it is time to grab for your favorite keyword tool.
Expand your keyword list
So for example with the Google Keyword Tool you can go in there and type in any term you want. It is going to populated related terms and give you metrics like estimated traffic values, Cost Per Click, and other relevant information.
So it starts with your brainstorm and then you expand on each on of your keywords using a keyword tool. By using the keyword tools you can get a ton of related keywords that you probably wouldnt think of.
Another way to do this is typing your keyword into google and using google suggest and related search terms in the search results.
Those will all be terms you can add to your keyword list. Your keyword list will be used later when you write your blog posts. It will be used to come up with topics and keywords to target with your blog content.
Now lets take your keyword list to the next level. No add some search terms with buyer intent. These types of keywords will get people to your site that are ready to by products and join your email list. The exact type of traffic we want to attract!
Keywords with buyer intent could include terms like review, discount, and words that show interest in purchasing something. It doesnt matter if you are promoting your own products or affiliate products, keywords with buyer intent will almost always convert better. It is much easier to convert someone who is already in the market to buy something.
I like to keep my keyword list in a spreadsheet. This will allow you to keep things organized. You can even go down your keyword list and mark keywords off after you create content on them. This way you can keep track of all the keywords you have already created content for.
